Iron Cross Begonia, Begonia masoniana
The Iron Cross Begonia is a semi-tropical evergreen, rhizomatous perennial native to Southern China, Singapore, Viet Nam and India. Grown for its striking foliage of large, oval, puckered-textured, bright green leaves with a cross-shaped, dark chocolate brown center. Small pink flowers grow during the summer. Can live happily outdoors during the frost-free months.
The dark chocolate center marking resembles the Iron Cross used on shields during the Crusades. The Latin species name honors L. Maurice Mason, English plant collector, who brought this plant from Singapore back to England in 1952 and gave it the common name of iron cross. Winner of the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.
