Caring for Your Gränsfors Bruk Axe
A well-made axe, like one from Gränsfors Bruk, can last a lifetime—and beyond—when properly cared for. Regular maintenance helps preserve performance, safety, and longevity. Below are essential care guidelines to help keep your axe sharp, secure, and well-preserved for years.

Sharpening Your Axe
Sharpening depends on the condition of the edge:

1. For major nicks or wear, use an emery wheel or fine-toothed flat file. Avoid overheating—cool frequently. Keep the edge symmetrical and maintain the original shape by filing evenly on both sides.
2. For minor dulling, a wet bench grinder or coarse handheld whetstone works well. Always grind with the entire bevel face against the stone, maintaining the axe’s original profile. You may grind with or against the stone’s rotation—against creates less burr, with reduces digging.
3. To hone the edge, use a coarse then fine whetstone. Moisten it with water (for clay/sandstone) or oil (for carborundum/Arkansas). Move in a circular motion and hone both sides to remove the feather edge. Strop on leather for a finer edge. Always maintain the edge shape suited to your axe’s purpose.

Replacing the Handle
If your handle becomes damaged or loose, it can be replaced:

1. Saw off the old handle close to the axe head.
2. Drill and remove as much of the wood and glue from the axe eye as possible.
3. Clean the inside of the axe eye with a knife.
4. Fit the new, dry handle into the axe head, ensuring correct alignment and a tight fit.
5. Add glue to the wedge slit, insert the wooden wedge, and drive it in firmly.
6. Trim the excess wood and insert a diagonal iron wedge if needed (more common for larger axes).

Important: Never burn an old handle out—the heat can weaken the steel.

Treating the Handle
Gränsfors Bruk handles are made from hickory and treated with linseed oil stain. To maintain the finish, especially after reshaping or scratching, reapply the following linseed oil stain mix:

1. ⅓ boiled linseed oil
2. ⅓ balsam turpentine
3. ⅓ burnt umber linseed oil paint (e.g., from Ottosson Färgmakeri)

Apply generously, wait 15–20 minutes, then wipe clean. Adjust the stain strength based on how dark you want the finish.

Storage Tips
Store your axe in a dry, well-ventilated area. Keep the blade covered with its leather sheath when not in use. Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture or extreme heat to prevent rusting or handle shrinkage.
