The American Felling Axe is a 5lb felling axe for large timber, built to bring down big trees by hand, the way it was done before chainsaws. A long hickory handle and a curved bit turn that weight into cutting force; your job is to place the swing.
The bit is forged to a 4.5" curve, so the edge enters the wood at an angle and releases cleanly between strokes. This geometry was developed for cutting into fresh, resinous wood like spruce and pine, where the grain runs tight, and the wood is dense. The edge opens a wide kerf with each stroke, letting the weight of the head drive the cut. A matching natural whetstone keeps that edge working through sustained use.
In the late 1980s, Gränsfors Bruk removed piecework, paints, lacquers, solvents, and epoxy from production entirely, shifting the focus to getting the forging right the first time. In 1990, the forge won the Ecological Design Prize from Svensk Form and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation. The American Felling Axe is a product of that shift — it ships with a vegetable-tanned leather sheath and the Gränsfors axe book, backed by a 20-year warranty.
