MEET OUR MAKERS
Welcome to the first in our series of Makers Reflect. We designed these to
support our community of makers during these challenging times, and we hope
they will inspire you. Our global partners do good through the environmentally
responsible pieces they grow and craft, and these include our maker friends in
California who lovingly create products made from organic white sage that
cleanses the energy and purifies the air. We recently checked in with
California White Sage to see how they’re staying fulfilled,
optimistic, and joyful during these challenging times.
CALIFORNIA WHITE SAGE
California White Sage is a 40-acre ranch near San Diego
where sage grows naturally. Owned and operated by Robin Taylor, the company’s
fields sprawl along the coastal region of San Diego County and Baja California,
Mexico. California White Sage began cultivating white sage (salvia alpiana) in
its native environment more than a decade ago and has been producing organically
grown, sustainably harvested products since. California White Sage is the only
certified organic growers of white sage in the U.S. with certification from both
the U.S. Agriculture (USDA) and the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF).
We caught up with Robin in sage fields located in the Tijuana River Valley 5 miles from the Pacific Ocean:
How are you staying resilient?
During difficult situations I try to think and do things differently than I did before.
What keeps you fulfilled?
My twin daughters.
Where do you find joy?
I find joy when I'm harvesting white sage.
"I LOVE THE SMELL, THE OILY FEEL WHEN YOU CUT THE STEMS, THE COLOR, AND THE STRENGTH OF THE PLANT."
How do you use white sage sticks?
I try not to advise anyone on how to use sage since to me it is very personal. My family uses it to cleanse the energy in our home and on our bodies. Let the smoke surround you and then think about how that smell makes you feel.
What are you grateful for?
I am grateful for wife, my children, my two businesses, and my dog Maeve.
What do you hope for the future?
That my business can make it through our current pandemic situation.
