Haws

Established in 1886 by gardener and inventor John Haws in Clapton, London, Haws is the world’s oldest watering can maker, celebrating over 130 years as a cherished symbol of British horticulture. The original watering can, patented for superior balance, cleanliness, and ease of use, laid the foundational principles still central to each piece crafted today.

Every Haws metal watering can is meticulously handmade in Smethwick, West Midlands, by a dedicated group of skilled craftspeople. Each artisan specializes in traditional methods, guiding each can through a rigorous 10-stage sequence—including precise metal spinning, delicate soldering, and careful hand-polishing. This intricate process, spanning over 200 individual steps, underscores the immense skill and pride the makers pour into every watering can. The current range features pieces crafted from durable galvanized steel, timeless copper that develops a distinctive patina over time, and practical, lightweight plastic models suited to everyday gardening tasks. Regardless of material, each watering can embodies the dedication of the skilled hands who shape them.

Today, under the stewardship of the Pennock family, Haws continues to blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation. Their evolving commitment to sustainability is evident in eco-friendly packaging choices and thoughtful product refinements, all while steadfastly honoring the artisanal heritage that has defined Haws from the beginning.
