ABOUT NGWENYA GLASS

For decades Ngwenya Glass has been giving used glass new life by recycling and transforming it into refined products including tableware, drinking glasses, vases,and objects. The original Ngwenya glass factory was establishedby Swedish Aid in 1979 to train Swazis in the age-old art of glass blowing. During this time, two of the factory’s most exceptional talents were sent to Sweden where they were trained by some of the leading glassblowers in the world. As a result, from 1981 to its closure in 1985, Ngwenya Glass was known for a refined, clean, Swedish modern style. In 1987 Ngwenya Glass was rediscovered and reopened by Richard, Alix and Chas Prettejohn, a family with zero experience in making glass but a passionate commitment to recycling glass and to doing good for the environment and community. The first thing the Prettejohn’s did was employ two of the original Swedish-trained glass blowers, and these masters continue to train new apprentices and to inform the Ngwenya aesthetic today.
