Japanese Moss Balls | Sansevieria and Spider Plant Kokedama

Two complementary species share the spotlight in this Sansevieria and Spider Plant Kokedama—a living study in contrast and balance. The upright, variegated leaves of Sansevieria (Dracaena trifasciata, formerly Sansevieria laurentii) rise from a moss-wrapped base, paired with the arching, striped foliage of Chlorophytum comosum (Spider Plant). Together, they bring height, movement, and calm to interior spaces.

Each piece is hand-shaped in the Japanese Kokedama tradition, where the root ball is wrapped in natural moss and twine to create a living vessel.

This pairing is as functional as it is beautiful—both plants naturally filter indoor air. Sansevieria brings strong vertical form and sculptural stillness, thriving in low to bright, indirect light with minimal water. Spider Plant softens the composition with graceful arcs and trailing offshoots, often producing small “spiders” that spill gently over the sides.

Both species adapt easily to indoor environments and favor consistency over attention. Keep in average room temperatures between 60–85°F (15–29°C).

Please note that the plant you receive may be smaller and less mature than the one pictured, but it will be ready to grow and thrive in its new home.

Light
Bright, indirect light is best. Position near an east- or west-facing window where both plants receive soft light but are protected from direct sun, which can burn their leaves. Sansevieria will also tolerate lower light, while Spider Plant maintains its variegation best with consistent brightness.

Watering
When the moss ball feels light and dry, place it in a bowl or sink filled with room-temperature water, submerging about three-quarters of the ball. Hold it gently until air bubbles stop rising, and allow it to soak for 10–15 minutes. Lift, squeeze out any excess water, and return it to a tray or saucer to drain fully. Water only when dry—typically every 1–2 weeks depending on light and temperature.

Temperature & Humidity
Keep in average room temperatures between 60–85°F (15–29°C). Both plants are comfortable in typical household humidity around 30–50% and adapt easily to indoor environments. Avoid cold drafts, direct heat, or airflow from AC vents.

Pruning & Cleaning
Wipe Sansevieria leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their sheen. Trim any brown tips or yellowing leaves from the Spider Plant, cutting close to the base. You can prune back longer shoots or “pups” to maintain shape or encourage fuller growth.

Long-Term Care
Over time, if roots begin to show through the moss or growth slows noticeably, the Kokedama can be moved into a slightly larger pot. Place the entire moss ball into a vessel with fresh, well-draining soil so the top of the ball sits just above the surface.

These will be shipped directly to you from our grower.

Any other Bloomist purchases will be shipped separately. All orders will be shipped via UPS or USPS generally on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, and only in the Continental US; we cannot ship internationally nor to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico.

Live plants are shipped on a weather-permitting basis. If the forecast calls for cold temperatures along the shipping route, we'll hold your plant for the minimum number of days required to ship it safely. Temperature swings in shipping can sometimes cause a temporary shock to a plant causing one or two leaves to yellow. This does not impact the health of the plant. Simply remove the leaves and care for the plant as directed. Live plants cannot be returned or exchanged. Contact us immediately if any issues with your order.
