Copper, silicon, nickel, and chromium are added to iron to create CorTen steel, a process that develops a protective rust-like patina that deepens over time. This evolving surface doesn't weaken the structure—instead, it shields the stove from further corrosion, allowing it to withstand the elements season after season (CorTen steel lasts about 10x longer than regular steel).
