"Organizing my attention is vital for me, and not being distracted by screens is key to that,” says designer Allison Williams of Wms & Co., explaining the enduring allure of paper goods — including those she creates. “I keep our calendars and notepads in each and every room to jot down thoughts, to dos, and lists — because if I pick up my phone or log on to the computer to note something, it’s inevitable that I go down a rabbit hole of distraction.” Williams laughs when she’s asked about the pleasures of a product made for daily use, and made beautifully: “I grew up eating Chinese takeout on Herend Rothschild — my mom’s attitude was, if it’s good enough for your mouth, it's good enough for a nice plate,” she says. “To this day, I believe that every object in your daily life should be visually pleasing, no matter how inconsequential.
