Lucky Fish

Jann Cheifitz entered the universe of the Edible Schoolyard at the behest of a friend. The organization, founded by Alice Waters, works to catalyze interest in food, nature, and sustainability among students — including those at Oakland’s Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, where participants tend to a one-acre garden. “Jamie Rosenthal from Lost & Found in L.A invited me to design a product to be sold at a benefit for the Edible Schoolyard — it was a gorgeous event, with amazing merchandise and beautiful, delicious food, and a fabulous crowd — including Alice herself — in an amazing space,” she says. “We had a huge pile of the tea towels and sold every single one.” That event spurred this set of tea towels, benefiting the non-profit. “Everything that Alice and the Edible Schoolyard project taught resonated with me, and I was delighted to support the programme in some way,” Cheifitz says. “I only wish that the principles of the program could be applied in all schools everywhere.”
