Corie Humble, a veteran accessories designer, thought she was embarking on a new sideline in jewelry design when she signed up for a class in Austin, Texas, where she lives. She found, though, that her mind kept moving to larger shapes β and instead of creating jewelry, she soon discovered she was, in fact, a designer of striking, geometric mobiles. βThis scale is something I really enjoy,β says Humble. βThe first one looked a little wonky, but it was still really cool, and I got a little bit obsessed and kept making them.β For Bloomist, Humble has integrated air plants into her mobiles, a literal balancing act that forced her to experiment with new approaches to how her mobiles bear the plantsβ unpredictable weights. βIt changed the way I construct the mobiles,β she says. βBut I have one in my room with air plants now, and itβs amazing. They just have this feeling of ahh β the materials are so warm, and they just feel good.β
