West Coast native Peter Maxwell launched accessories brand Made Solid in 2014, and his process has endured throughout its lifespan. Each of his leather pieces — hand-stamped leather trays, hand-stitched tote bags — is produced onsite in his Los Angeles workshop, using all-natural, vegetable-tanned cowhide leather sourced from one of the oldest tanneries in the U.S.: Hermann Oak Leather Co., a nearly 120-year-old tannery in St. Louis, Missouri. Pieces are hand-stitched — not with a sewing machines — using Western saddle-making techniques; see them at work in the lacing that joins the leather-wrapped vases for Bloomist. And finishing details — are similarly executed by hand. It’s all in the service of producing work that resonates through time — incorporating heritage materials and practices — and across cultures — in particular from Japan, given his collaborations with Mia Maxwell, his wife and business partner.
