Equal parts functional object, art piece, and conversation starter, this modern take on the Turkey Wing broom is handmade using an 1890’s kick winder broom machine that’s reminiscent of the domestic tools originating from the Shaker villages of New England. Brooms are crafted from all natural materials, including bristles made of ancient sorghum grass that’s grown in North America. Everything is dyed in house using natural methods.
Display hung on a wall, and use to clean between the bricks or stones of a fireplace and to clean up after a session re-potting plants.
Available in Natural and Black.
ABOUT CUSTODIAN
Custodian Studio was founded in 2018 by Brooklyn artist Erin Rouse, a sculptor turned broom maker who describes herself as a “friendly luddite who loves to make things”.
A Martha Stewart Living alumni with a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from Rice University, Erin is interested in the overlap of art and domestic life. “Brooms are such an incredible design object, and the act of sweeping house changes the energy,” she explains. She is also an avowed minimalist. “I believe in having fewer things in our lives that are meaningful; if I can see the hand in it, it makes me feel better.”
