From the forest to the table. Women weavers transform fibers including Bayal, Mimbre, Mahagua, and Enea from Guatemala’s Peten Jungle into these rustic, durable placemats. Commonly used to make roof thatching, Bayal fibers features multiple natural hues that look striking woven together.

Given their handcrafted nature each placemat is unique.

ABOUT ITZA WOOD

Itza Wood was founded by Mother-and-Daughter team Suzanne and Eliza Babarczy with a simple mission: to break the poverty cycle in the Peten region of Guatemala. The company showcases products made with exotic tropical hard woods from the Peten Jungle to help fund social initiatives like employment and education that enhance local economic growth. During Covid, many women from surrounding rural communities desperately needed paying jobs. Suzanne and Eliza had been searching for ways to connect them to economic opportunities and found the solution in the jungle. Itza Wood’s Fiber collection initiative has enabled and empowered a group of 20 weavers to learn valuable new skills and to make an income for their families while working from home. Learn more about Itza Wood’s journeys into the jungle in our Journal story here.
