Bright Black
“My scent design process is part art, part intuition, and all heart,” says Bright Black co-founder Tiffany Griffin, offering the limited-edition KOI candle as an example. “When approaching a new design, I think about what I want to communicate through scent, and how I want people to feel when they experience it. Together, the eucalyptus and citrus wake up the senses. Paired with earthy, also grassy hemp, these scent notes also remind you to cherish and appreciate what you have and those you love, right now. It's a really beautiful, invigorating and grounding design!” Griffin, who worked in government and public policy before starting up Bright Black with her husband, Dariel, says 2020 has been “full of very high highs (like a collaboration with Michelle Obama) and very low lows (like the fact that Black people are still fighting for the recognition of basic humanity in this country)”; the Durham, N.C.-based entrepreneur says she learned this year how to ask for help: “What I now know about myself, as cliche as it sounds, is that I cannot do it all, by myself,” she says. “I literally thought I could do anything if I just worked hard enough. Not this year — I've had to say, ‘I can't do that, but I can do this instead.’ I've pushed out deadlines. I've asked for help. These are all new spheres for me, but ultimately ones that enhance connection and empathy, and so for that, I'm grateful for the challenges of this year.”
