Ceramic and driftwood are a natural material mix and Michele Quan combines the two beautifully in this simple, artful wall hanging with overlapping clay discs. These are designed to be used indoors as well as outside (in a protected area away from high winds). Michele makes the discs from clay and fires them in a gas kiln to 2350 degrees. She assembles the wall hangings using materials including hemp rope and reclaimed driftwood. Please expect variations in the driftwood piece as all are found and each piece is unique, as in nature.
All pieces are found, and each is unique.
This simplified all-white hanging is made exclusively for Bloomist.
Michele Quan, with studios in Brooklyn and Upstate NY, makes ceramic art and objects for the home and garden, many of which incorporate objects and images that are rooted in the visual symbols of Eastern iconography. “Impermanence and interconnection are ideas that I return to often, drawing inspiration from the writings and teachings of Buddhism and its extensive visual language,” says Michele. “I understand the meanings to be universal and independent of religious attachments. My hope is that my work serve both as objects of contemplation and as a source of encouragement and refuge.”
