Iron Cross Begonia Kokedama, Begonia masoniana
The Iron Cross Begonia is a semi-tropical evergreen, rhizomatous perennial native to Southern China, Singapore, Viet Nam and India. Grown for its striking foliage of large, oval, puckered-textured, bright green leaves with a cross-shaped, dark chocolate brown center. Small pink flowers grow during the summer. Can live happily outdoors during the frost-free months.
The dark chocolate center marking resembles the Iron Cross used on shields during the Crusades. The Latin species name honors L. Maurice Mason, English plant collector, who brought this plant from Singapore back to England in 1952 and gave it the common name of iron cross. Winner of the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.
One of the easiest houseplants to care for but they will also let you know if they feel that their water or light are a bit off. Ideal daytime temperatures are 70º-75º to 60º at night. Requires bright indirect sun, keeping it out of direct sunlight and rotate frequently to expose it equally to all sides. They thrive on humidity, be careful if misting leaves that they don't stay too wet, it's easy to add humidity by placing it over some water + pebbles in a tray. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer weekly at quarter strength or at half strength every two weeks Stop fertilizing during the winter when plant growth slows.
Take care as begonias are toxic to cats and dogs.
Kokedamas are an ancient form of Japanese Bonsai that dates to around 1600 AD. These living planters are made with moss, soil, twine, and a plant and are easy, low maintenance plants.
Kokedama plants come with either a Tray for Basic Planter, Grey Patina or Tray for Basic Planter, White Patina. They also pair well with our Wrought Iron Planter Stand in Small, sold separately here as well as our Granite Stands, Goblet Terra Cotta Planters and Jikoku wood bases.
Please note that the plants you receive may be smaller and less mature than the ones photographed. They will be eager for growth in their new home!
*Note: These will be shipped directly to you from our grower within 7-10 days; any other Bloomist purchases will be shipped separately. All orders will be shipped via UPS or USPS generally on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, and only in the Continental US; we cannot ship internationally nor to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico.
Live plants are shipped on a weather-permitting basis. If the forecast calls for cold temperatures along the shipping route, we'll hold your plant for the minimum number of days required to ship it safely. Temperature swings in shipping can sometimes cause a temporary shock to a plant causing one or two leaves to yellow. This does not impact the health of the plant. Simply remove the leaves and care for the plant as directed. Live plants cannot be returned or exchanged. Contact us immediately if any issues with your order.
