Salsola tragus

Tumbleweed Decor

A tumbleweed, also known as Russian thistle (Salsola tragus), is a fascinating shrub native to the arid grasslands of the Ural mountains in Russia. Its most distinctive feature is its unique ball shape, which allows it to tumble effortlessly across the desert prairie.

This rolling living thing is not just a whimsical sight; it’s a master of survival. As mature plants detach from their roots at the end of the growing season, they embark on a journey driven by the wind.

On windy summer days, it can seem like the whole desert is alive with movement, as these tumbleweeds spread their seeds far and wide, ensuring the next generation finds new ground to grow.

Characteristics and Uses

Tumbleweeds are more than just a classic sight in the American West; they symbolize rustic charm and natural beauty. These prickly plants require careful handling, but their unique ball shape and texture make them a standout choice for decorative purposes. Prairie tumbleweeds bound across paths and freeways, becoming an iconic part of the landscape.

When used in decor, they can be paired with dried grasses or pine cones to create stunning, eye-catching arrangements. Their natural, rugged appeal adds a touch of the Wild West to any setting, making them a popular choice for those looking to bring a bit of the outdoors inside.

Tumbleweeds are naturally quite prickly. Handle with care when unpacking, and use gardening gloves for extra protection when handling.

Due to the natural state of dried botanicals, each is unique and varied, and some breakage may occur in shipping. Sizing is approximate. (You can’t measure nature.) These are collected in the West, cleaned, and dried before shipping directly from our Utah supplier. During the winter months, storms may delay them. Dried Tumbleweed in Decor and Design

Dried tumbleweed, often called tumbleweed, is a versatile and charming addition to any decor, especially for those who appreciate the rustic allure of the American West. With their distinctive ball shape, these unique plants can serve as striking centerpieces or be incorporated into various arrangements. Tumbleweed seeds send out roots in the spring, and with enough moisture, they grow rapidly, forming their characteristic shape.

When dried, they can be paired with other natural elements like dried grasses and pine cones to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind decorative pieces. Whether you’re aiming to evoke the spirit of the American West or simply want to add a unique touch to your home, dried tumbleweed+ offers endless possibilities for creative design.

We love the sculptural quality of these dried forms and recommend medium and large sizes as decorative accents in fireplaces, on top of armoires, or hanging from the ceiling in clusters. Small and medium tumbleweeds can be arranged in our Papier Maché Bowls (both sizes pictured) or displayed on a table as part of a vignette.

Big Visual Impact

"I am so happy that I purchased the Dried Tumbleweed! I bought the large and it is a great size and shipped without any issue. It is such an interesting piece. The texture and dimension adds so much to a simple vignette. I've paired it with french glass demijohns and will add large shells for an even more organic look for the summer."

Q&A

Do you guys have any idea how flammable these weeds are! Very easy to set on fire and they burn very hot and quickly with. Flames three or four feet high. They are dangerous to have in the house or anywhere they may ignite. The prickly seeds can be a real pain and they can lay dormant in the soil 10 or 15 years before sprouting. Your are spreading noxious weeds. The pollen from these weed is one of the most wide spread in the world. Some people develop sever respiratory problems from the pollen. I have raised them for pollen collectors who vacuum up the pollen. Clean it and sell it to companies to make vaccines for people with allergies . As a farmer for over fifty years I find it really stupid that you are selling them. Poor quality and dangerous produce.
